How much like Jesus are you really?
Do you wish your family was more like Jesus? Do you wonder how your family can be motivated to develop Christ-like character? How to motivate your family to be more like Jesus? You set goals in different areas and character goals for yourself, and you want to set goals for your children as well. Here are some questions you can ask yourselves to determine how God may want to change you this year to make you more like Jesus.
Spend time in the word of God and on your knees before the Lord as you plan and set goals for the year.
Application Questions:
Think about where you are now and where you are headed. Where are you on the road to spiritual growth in Christ? Are you moving forward, or backward? Are you at a standstill? Be brutally honest with yourself.
How to Easily Talk About Jesus in Your Home
Here are 5 Reflection Questions to Start Setting Character Goals:
- In what areas of your responsibilities or God-given roles do you need to change?
- How are your attitudes and who do you need to ask forgiveness of?
- What Godly character qualities do you feel most lacking in and do you think need the most focused effort this year?
- What bad habits do you need to change?
- What sin is God convicting you to repent of or turn from?
Spend time in the Word of God and on your knees before the Lord as you plan and set goals for the year. Stop and think deeply about your life and your family. Even if you have to say no to some good activities in order to take time for this, do it, so that you can evaluate your life from God’s point of view and grow in Christ-like character this year!
Do you really know Jesus?
An Activity To Help Determine Character God Wants to Change in You
- Make a list of character qualities of God. Start with 10 or 15 because I think that there is an endless number.
- Look up the definition of each character quality in the dictionary and write the definition beside the character quality.
- Look in the Bible for a Biblical definition, too, especially if it differs from the general dictionary-definition of the word.
- Evaluate yourself on a scale of one to 10 (10 being perfect and 1 being totally lacking in this quality) objectively assessing how you stack up and exhibit this quality in your life.
- Look up Bible verses that talk about or demonstrate this quality and especially how God exhibits the character quality.
- Look for Bible verses that talk about how to exhibit or increase in this character quality.
- Pray over how you can develop each of these character qualities.
Evaluating Your Children’s Character
What Character Goals Does God Have For You This Year
What character qualities do you feel God wants you, or desires for you, to grow in this year? Choose a character quality to focus on. You could choose one character quality per quarter, one per year, one every six months, or you could even choose one character quality per month. You decide. There’s no one right way. This is a little bit similar, but not exactly, to choosing a Word of the year.

Pick one or two of these qualities to focus on for the year, quarter, month, or week.
Have you chosen a Word of the Year?
I like this idea. I did it last year for the first time and my Word last year was “Courage.” Frankly, it could be my Word again! But, I have recently chosen my Word of the Year, and it is “Gather.”
How I have applied this Word, “gather.” I’ve been facilitating people coming together and connecting in my Facebook Group, Make Your Home For God, (https://www.facebook.com/groups/paradisepraisescommunity) encouraging them to introduce themselves and welcome one another.
“Knowing where your strengths and weaknesses lie and what God wants to change in you will help you as you set goals for the coming year.“
I’ve done group texts when possible to bring people together and connect, friends who live far apart, to try to open up “How are you REALLY doing?” and by being transparent and vulnerable in my own sharing, to be an example of going deeper, but pointing to God’s help and grace in my life, to encourage them, rather than it becoming a complaining session.
I am considering hosting a couples’ gathering 3-4 times this year for fellowship, sharing, and prayer (simple refreshments/dessert).
If you have chosen a Word of the Year, or you have a character quality that is your focus this year, would you share it, and how are you trying to apply it? Would love to hear!

What Is Your Word Of The Year
Your Word of the Year may give you a clue as to what God wants you to focus on this year. Often the Word of the Year is a character quality! After choosing a Word of the Year, write down some verses to memorize and meditate on that relate to it. You might print them out or use hand-lettering to illustrate them. You might decorate them, make them pretty, and put the verses up in your home. Frame them. Make it so that they are in front of your eyes often and in your thoughts.
Make sure you’re thinking about these verses. These may be great verses to memorize with your children!
To help you out, I created a Set of Pretty Printable Character Quality cards (30 in the set) with a corresponding Bible verse on each card–these also coordinate with the Pretty Printable Scripture Cards to reinforce the Bible verses in your children’s minds as they memorize them–and both are available to you Free when you Subscribe to Your Home For God.
