Look To Our Heavenly Father For What Goals to Set
As we look towards a new year, a new month, a new week, or a new day, we must look to our Heavenly Father for His help and direction to set His goals for us.
All too often we sit down and make our plans without thinking about asking the Lord or we ask Him to put his stamp of approval on what we’ve already decided to do. Even Jesus went to His Heavenly Father and prayed–prayed for hours and all night at times–for direction and when He was going to choose His disciples, He went to the Heavenly Father, didn’t He, for His goals for Him?
What worthless goals!
When we get to the end of our lives, we will have accomplished something, but will it be what our Heavenly Father wanted us to accomplish? Jesus, at the end of His life, was able to say that He had fulfilled all that His Father wanted Him to do–He fulfilled all of God’s goals for Him.
Are you setting worthless goals?
Jesus Accomplished All the Goals His Heavenly Father Set For Him
Can anything more be said of a man? We are mortals, sinners, and we will fail. We aren’t perfect, but we will succeed much more at what’s important and eternal if we seek the Heavenly Father’s wisdom and guidance first. I would far rather succeed at a few of God’s goals for me than succeed at a ton of goals that weren’t in His plan for me. And indeed goals that might’ve been very foolish. I want to know God’s plan for me–His will–His goals. Don’t you, too? So let’s go and talk to God first.
As you begin the new year, I hope you’re setting goals–I hope you’re setting goals every year and throughout the year. I hope and pray that this is an important part of your life. I hope and pray that you take the time to do this this year. I recommend setting aside a time of fasting and prayer as you decide what goals to set.

Fasting and Prayer Over Goals
I haven’t always done this. I haven’t fasted often enough in recent years, but I have made a practice of fasting and prayer in the past and I know how powerful it is. So let’s challenge each other to make fasting a practice this year. (I know that your situation may not allow you to fast from food at the present time, and that’s ok. Perhaps you could find a different thing to fast from until you are able to again?)
Does God have these goals for you?
Make Sure Your Goals Are Worth Achieving
Like me, you’ve heard on the news or on social media routinely about some of the crazy goals that people set and worthless things that people accomplish. They will come to the end of their life and, yes, they will have succeeded at accomplishing a goal.

They will have succeeded at accomplishing something that was mentionable, notable, but they will come to the end of their life and have accomplished something useless or worse. I will give you some examples, and yes, I am making these examples up, but they are not that far-fetched! A person whose goal was accomplished to have the largest collection of beer bottles ever. Or they gave more money than anyone else in the world to promote a godless organization that did blasphemous things.
Another example: they made it their life’s work to promote falsehood. They believed it, but it was false according to the Bible. They did something that no one else had done. But to what avail? I hope and pray that we are dedicating our lives, and are committed, to setting goals that are worthy goals. Even if we don’t set goals that are sinful, we need to be cautious that we don’t set frivolous or meaningless goals. Set goals that God is pleased about. Let’s set goals that our Heavenly Father directs us to set!
How to set goals our Heavenly Father likes!
I would encourage you to go before the Lord and fast and pray to find out what God’s will is for you. There is a reason that you’re here on earth! God has a purpose for you and your family. He’s working out his purpose. God created you to glorify Him and He created your family to glorify Him.
What Goals Does Your Heavenly Father Have For You?
Let’s find out what God wants to accomplish. As we set goals for the future, we must look to our Heavenly Father for His help and direction. We’ve talked about going before the Lord and asking Him what his goals are for us. We’ve talked about setting worthy goals. And we’ve talked about looking at our strengths and weaknesses and our children’s and not comparing ourselves to others as we set goals. In the next post I’ll talk about some of the things that I learned about goals when I became a parent.
