For years, I struggled with my weight. I tried different diets, followed what worked for others, and pieced together strategies, thinking if I could be like this person or that one, I would finally succeed.
But it never worked.
I was caught in a cycle of comparison, copying, competing, and coveting. I envied the success of others, yet deep down, I was stuck—morbidly obese and miserable.
Then, one day, God changed everything.
A Life-Changing Wake-Up Call
My biggest transformation didn’t start with a diet. It started with a trial that tested my faith and reshaped my entire life—a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
Doctors told me I had two football-sized tumors, the cancer had spread, and it was not caught early. At that time, 85% of those diagnosed with ovarian cancer died. My future looked bleak.
But God had a different plan.
He was at work in many ways during that time, but one of the first things He did was to get me into surgery within three days of my diagnosis. Everyone I knew and many who I didn’t were praying for me. When the surgeon went in three days later, she found only one tumor, contained, and caught early. The prognosis changed. I realized I was a walking miracle. Either a trained professional saw and measured a tumor that didn’t exist, or God had performed a miracle.
After going through chemotherapy, I began a journey of recovery and now have been cancer-free for over 20 years.
God had gotten my attention. I was desperate to be changed and get serious about my health.
The Turning Point: Losing My First 50 Pounds
In my desperation to be healthier, I took action. The first step? Losing 50 pounds.
I didn’t do it overnight, and I didn’t do it perfectly. There is no one perfect way to lose weight. I’ve lost fifty pounds twice and in very different ways. I would not be able to apply the same method of eating now that I used the first time I lost weight because in between the two weight loss successes, I discovered I had food sensitivities and wouldn’t eat the things I ate back then.
But the strategy that contributed to my success both times changed everything and applies no matter who you are, how old you are, or how much you need to lose:
➡ Weight loss is not about age—it’s about strategy and mindset.
This was the first time I lost fifty pounds, but it applied when I lost another fifty pounds after age 60.
Embarking on a journey to better health and purpose after the age of 60 may seem daunting, but it’s entirely achievable.
Here’s What Worked For Me
1. I Surrendered My Health to God
I prayed for God to change me–for a real, lasting change. And, I committed to whatever He would tell me to do. Not just weight loss but a renewed mind and body. I believed that if I didn’t lose weight, I would die. It was life and death to me. So, I could not be dissuaded, tempted, or listen to the naysayers, no matter who they were or how well-meaning they were.
Are you feeling:
✅ Unsettled in your life?
✅ Dissatisfied with where you are?
✅ Desperate for something to change?
Then, God may be preparing you for transformation. In my experience, God often “tills the soil” of your heart and then fertilizes it before He plants new seeds of growth. Are you ready to stop resisting and step into change? How surrendered are you? Have you ever said to God, “Whatever You want, Lord. I surrender”? “Here I am, change me.”
That’s what happened when He prepared my heart to lose the weight, some of which I’d gained back after losing 50 pounds years earlier.
2. I Found a System That Worked for My Body
Have you ever felt that everyone around you had a plan for how you should lose weight? Have you ever felt misunderstood by well-meaning friends and relatives, and even judged, when they told you, “You just need to be a little more active.” Or, maybe you’ve been told what diet they’re following, or how “ALL you have to do is _____ (fill in the blank).”
If you have ever experienced these scenarios, you know how I felt. But, the fact is that you are uniquely created by God for a purpose, a saying you’ve heard over and over from me! It applies in weight loss, as well! God has created you very differently from everyone else, and He has a plan for you. Go to Him, and ask Him how He wants you to lose weight! He will show you! And, He may very well show you a different way the next time you want to lose weight!
At least, that is what happened for me. The first time I lost 50 pounds, I hadn’t found out I have food sensitivities, or perhaps I hadn’t developed them fully yet.
The second time I lost fifty pounds, God had prepared me to be desperate for change again. Then, when I asked Him how He wanted me to lose weight this time, He led me through some random minor events, to find an app that I still use daily, and that changed my life.
Utilizing the “Lose It” app, I set goals, macros, and adopted a low-carb, high-protein diet, focusing on keeping carbohydrate intake around 10%, which effectively controlled my appetite. Have you ever prayed, like I did for years, “Lord, take away my appetite! It’s out of control!” I’ve now experienced a completely controlled appetite as long as I keep my carbs at around 10%-13%. I can eat as much as I want, anytime I want, and never feel starved or deprived!
Remarkably, age did not hinder this transformation; the weight steadily came off as I adhered to this plan.
It’s noteworthy that 41.5% of adults aged 60 and older are considered obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. aarp.org
Despite common perceptions, significant weight loss and health improvements are attainable later in life. Studies have shown that healthy weight loss in individuals over 65 can be achieved through lifestyle interventions over periods of up to one year. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Have you been thinking that because you’re in your 40’s or 50’s, that plays a part in your difficulty to lose weight? Have you been blaming your age in your difficulty to lose weight?
“Age is all in your head. It’s true that age is just a number.”
Because it never occurred to me that my age would play a part in my weight loss, it didn’t!
I have since discovered that:
✅ Low-carb, high-protein eating controlled my appetite
✅ Tracking my macros helped me stay on track (I used the Lose It! app)
✅ Keeping carbs under 10% eliminated cravings

And, this is the method that I’ve used to lose 50 pounds the second time, after the age of 60. I continue to eat this way. It’s not a diet, it’s a way of life!
Also, when I gained some pounds back after age 65, I used this method to lose 22 pounds (more than I’d gained back), and I’ve kept it off ever since. I am now 15 pounds away from my wedding weight–my next weight loss goal!
No matter what plan you follow, consistency is the key. Note that I did NOT say perfection. You don’t need the perfect diet or to be perfect—you need a sustainable system.
That is why it’s important for me to mention that I lost over 100 pounds over the years WITHOUT EXERCISE!
There are people who believe and proclaim LOUDLY that you can’t lose weight without exercise! That is simply NOT TRUE. I am living, walking proof.
In fact, it was the belief that others imposed on me that I needed to adopt a fairly rigorous, disciplined exercise program, that KEPT ME from losing weight for years!
I heard a weight loss coach just yesterday trying to say that you must adopt a regimen of exercise for 20-30 minutes three times a week to lose weight. I can’t tell you how vigorously opposed to this I am. It’s fine, if you WANT to exercise, but you do NOT need to exercise to lose weight!!!
In fact, at the beginning of my Superhero Weight Loss System, I strongly urge you not to exercise. It’s too much to focus on when attempting to make changes.
If you’re like me, exercise is not the key to your weight loss. People who had not ever needed to lose a pound in their life told me over and over that I just needed to exercise, and the weight would magically fall off. For me, that was not true, and actually kept me imprisoned in my obesity.
I adjure you to go to the Lord and ask HIM how you should lose weight.
First of all, it is a spiritual battle, because the Bible says that gluttony is a sin. Second, there are physical symptoms and conditions each person may have that need to be considered. There are simple tips that I give you, but you must be under your doctor’s care. And, thirdly, there’s a mental (mindset) component that is essential to adopt.
I personally have difficulty listening to someone tell me how to lose weight who has never had to lose a significant amount of weight in their life. And, please don’t listen to someone who’s telling you you must do workouts, go jogging, or do any exercise to lose weight.
Disclaimer: you may find that you need to exercise after losing a significant amount of weight in order to keep the weight off. (I found this to be true, until I found out that I can keep the weight off by keeping my carb percentage at or around the 10% level.) Or you may want to exercise to change the amount of muscle in your body and be more toned, but you don’t need to exercise to lose weight.
3. I Let Go of the “I’m Too Old” Excuse
Many believe losing weight after 60 is impossible (or even 40 or 50!). But guess what? Your age is not a roadblock.
I lost weight over 60 because I stopped making excuses and followed a simple, faith-driven plan. And I continue to eat this way today—without cravings or struggles.
I Stopped Comparing and Copying, and Asked God What His Plan Was For Me–What About You?
If you feel stuck—whether in weight loss, business, or life—it’s time to surrender to God’s Plan for you. That might be a different plan than anyone else’s, and it may be Plan B to you, but it’s God’s Plan A.
“Just like as a seed that wants to become a mighty oak tree must be willing to change and stop being a seed–to give up what it is to become what it’s created to be–so your transformation starts with surrender.”
Wendy Gunn
So, ask yourself:
- What have I been resisting?
- Is God calling me to change?
- What’s one step I can take today toward better health and a renewed mind?
“You are not too old, too far gone, or too late to change. God is still writing your story. Are you ready to step into the next chapter?”
Wendy Gunn
Faith played a crucial role in my journey. By surrendering my struggles and seeking God’s guidance and the Holy Spirit’s power, I found the strength to make the necessary changes. This spiritual foundation provided the resilience I needed to overcome obstacles and achieve the goals that once seemed impossible.
If you’re experiencing a sense of dissatisfaction or unrest, consider it may be a sign that God is calling you to a time of transformation (and embrace that it is possible). Embrace the discomfort as a catalyst for change and invite the Lord’s transforming power into your life.
“Remember, like a seed must cease being a seed to become a mighty oak, we too must be willing to undergo change to fulfill our purpose.”
Wendy Gunn
Age is not a barrier to achieving significant milestones. I say,
“If you’ve still got breath, God’s got goals left for you to achieve.“
With faith, determination, and the right strategies, it’s possible to overcome challenges and lead a fruitful, big goal-achieving, healthy life. And, one of the most important and life-changing goals you can achieve is weight loss! This achievement may be the step you need to take to unlock the door and step through to achieve God’s purpose for your life.
