When you set goals for the year, it’s similar to setting goals for the month, the week, or the day. Just a longer time-frame. If you’re like me, it may feel intimidating, because you feel compelled to do what is written down, and a year is such a long time. There are so many unknowns.

10 Questions to Ask Yourself When Setting Goals!

When you fail at New Year’s Resolutions, now what?  You start again!

There have been times I was hesitant to set a yearly goal. And, so afraid I’d fail within a week or a month. I want to encourage you, however, as I’ve encouraged myself: Don’t be intimidated by it. First, this goal is not set in stone. You can change your mind about the goal and it’s ok. God may point you in a different direction during the year, but at least you’re a moving car that He can steer, and not parked at the curb, just waiting, and not going anywhere.

Second, if you made any progress at all, you’re further ahead than you were before! That’s success! I also want to encourage you not to seek perfection, because, as a plaque I have says, “Perfection doesn’t have limits”! That said, you will “fail”in reaching perfection, and therefore, need to continue to set new goals. So set a new goal from your new starting point! Don’t let that failure to reach perfection stop you from setting any goals. Keep on going. Set big goals, but break that big goal into smaller goals, and how great if you reach your goal earlier than expected and have to set a new goal, a higher goal, before the year is completed?! Celebrate the wins of completing each smaller step or goal in the pursuit of the big goal!

When You Fail at New Year’s Resolutions, What Now?

Steps To Setting Goals For The Year

Let me help you start over! When you’re setting up a year’s worth of goals and plans, first put in the things that you know are going to happen. Events, trips, major holidays, traditions that you always do. You know these things are going to happen this year, as much as you know anything.

You may already know about, for instance, a family reunion that is out of state and you’ll be traveling to it. You know when everyone’s birthdays are. You may know about something big like a family move, vacation or job change. If you know about special events coming up or travel that you’re going to be taking, write those things on the calendar.

10 Questions to Ask Yourself When Setting Goals!

Prompts To Help You When Setting Goals:

  1. What skills do you want to improve or learn?
  2. Is there schooling or instruction that you want to get?
  3. Is there anyone that you want to mentor or be mentored by?
  4. What books do you want to read and how many?
  5. What projects do you want to begin or complete?
  6. Are there home projects or is there remodeling that you want to plan?
  7. What travel do you want to do?

  9. What relationships need fostering? Will you join any groups, clubs, or teams this year? How much time will you need to dedicate to that?
  10. Will you set goals to get healthier and in better shape this year?

The answers to these questions will impact the goals that you set for the year.

Some Yearly Goals Are Individual and Some Involve Others

These questions are personal, and individual. Some of them impact just you and some impact your family. For those goals that involve your family, you will need to ask yourself questions regarding how you live out your roles. If you are a wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend. If you are a member of a church or are already involved in ministry or serving in your church, then you need to evaluate how you will fulfill these roles and responsibilities. You decide. Prayerfully decide.

Do You Feel You Have No Choice?

You make the choices, and decide. I know the feeling that you have no choice. But, there are very few times in life when you don’t have any choice at all. We all need to decide how we will live our life, what is truly important and eternal, and how we will live in obedience to Christ’s commands. If we truly have no choice in a bad situation, God will give us grace to respond to the circumstances as He wants us to. Most of the time, though, it’s up to us to make wise decisions as to how we will live in obedience to Him and what that will look like in our specific life and situation, based upon God’s leading by the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God.

What we need is more perseverance. We need to be more diligent. We need our mindset and self-talk to change, and we must not give up in our quest to live Godly lives that matter! Let’s set goals, no matter the time of year, decisively responding to God moving in our lives and His direction.” So you failed at your New Year’s Resolutions, so what!
